Your chauffeur will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Bago. Upon arrival, embark on an exciting sightseeing tour. Visit the Thamanay Buddhist Seminary, where about 150 monks live and study. Tour the 1,000-year-old Shwemawdaw Pagoda that has a spire taller than the more famous Shwedagon Pagoda. Afterwards, leave Bago for Kin Pun base camp. Enjoy lunch en route at a local restaurant. Arrive at your base camp at Kin Pun and head off to visit Kyaiktiyo, better known as the “Golden Rock,” an iconic landmark of Myanmar. It’s a huge boulder covered in gold leaf and delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff. A steep 11 km road from your base camp leads to the upper staging point of Kyaiktiyo. You will ride there in an open truck, which tend to be crowded and uncomfortable (be aware of this beforehand). The final 4km of the journey has to be completed on foot up a steep path. Once you arrive on top, enjoy the stunning panoramic view of the surrounding jungle and the spectacular sunset. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, hit the road to Hpa-An (120 km – 3½ hours), the capital of the Karen State. On the way, stop by Thaton, former capital of the Mon Kingdom. Continue on your way and make two more stops at the Bayinnyi and Kawgoon caves, splendidly formed inside limestone rocks. Arrive at Hpa-An. Visit Kantharyar Lake and bask in the breathtaking scenery with a nice view of the landmark Zwekabin Mountain in the distance. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and transfer to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Start your day with a delicious Burmese breakfast at a charming local teashop. Then visit the bustling local market and the Cultural Museum of the Karen (closed on Mondays and public holidays) and tour the Shweyinhmyaw Pagoda. Afterwards, drive o the port town of Mawlamyine and check into your hotel surrounded by elegant colonial-era buildings. Enjoy lunch and drive past lush rubber plantations to Thanbyuzayat, the western terminal of the infamous Burma-Siam “Death Railway”. Later afternoon, return to Mawlamyine. Optional alternative day itinerary: Visit the local market and the Cultural Museum of Karen (closed on Mondays and public holidays). Then visit the Saddan Cave (only if road conditions permit), a large underground cave with a long passage exiting to a beautiful lake.After lunch go on a scenic 45-minute boat ride on the Salween/Than Lwin River to observe the traditional local lifestyle. Tour the Kawhnat Pagoda complex and return to Mawlamyine by boat.
After breakfast, take a trishaw ride around the city, which was once a thriving port and a colonial post. Visit the Mahamuni Pagoda, Seindon Mibaya Kyaung, and the vibrant Zyegyi Market. Then take a boat ride to Bilu Island to experience real Myanmar away from urbanization. Get on an open-bed pickup truck and discover the serene scenery of verdant paddy fields and quaint villages. On the way, enjoy a picnic lunch and visit a small wood workshop. Late afternoon, return to Mawlamyine to enjoy the spectacular sunset from the Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, also known as the Kipling Pagoda. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight.
Enjoy an early breakfast and return to Yangon. Enjoy the roadside scenery of rubber plantations and remote villages. Have lunch at a local restaurant en route. Transfer to your hotel upon arrival in Yangon. Optional: If you wish you can experience another unique way of local transportation. Wake up very early to take the very simple and basic train to Thaton. Mingle with the local passengers and learn about their lives. Be ready to answer many questions about your life too as the train rattles through the countryside. Your driver will be waiting for you at the train station in Thaton to take you to Yangon (approx. 6 hours). No additional fees are charged. Kindly inform us your preference at the time of booking.
